Les éminences grises

Human brain section; confocal microscopy

In this image, Élodie Martin highlights oligodendrocytes, those discreet but fundamental figures of the central nervous system.Often in the shadow of neurons, these cells form myelin, an insulating sheath that accelerates the transmission of nerve signals. When this protection is impaired, as in multiple sclerosis, communication between neurons becomes fragile, leading to motor or cognitive disorders.

The oligodendrocytes then become grey eminences, trying to repair, rebuild and protect once again.

Understanding how these cells work to regenerate myelin is a key to better treating neurological diseases and helping the brain repair itself.
