Mouse retina - Confocal microscopy

This image by Gabriel Luna reveals the retina in a way it is rarely seen: not as a simple light sensor, but as an extremely complex neural tissue.

Each vessel irrigates the photoreceptor zones. Each astrocyte, in constant support, regulates ionic exchanges, feeds neurons and ensures the balance of this visual microcosm.

Observation of this interdependence between the vascular network and glial cells provides a better understanding of pathologies such as diabetic or hypertensive retinopathy, where this organization becomes disrupted, but also of neurodegenerative diseases, where astrocytes change form, function... and sometimes their protective role.

This image, with its resolution and depth, offers us a double view: global and microscopic.
A cellular panorama in which each structure plays its part, for the brain to see.
