Cerebellum harmony

Section of mouse cerebellum - Confocal microscopy

In this luminous composition, Melika Ghaznavirad explores the hidden elegance of the cerebellum, that discreet but essential center of movement coordination. The large pink cells, called Purkinje cells, spread their purple branches like sensory trees, collecting thousands of signals.

At their feet, the granular cells, in blue, send information from the body, as if feeding a neural highway dedicated to gesture.

They are particularly sensitive, and their dysfunction has been implicated in disorders such as cerebellar ataxia and autism.

By revealing their intimate structure and connections, this image enables researchers to better understand the origins of these pathologies... and to imagine new therapeutic avenues.
